Getting started

Ask your assistant something like "Is Acme Plumbing Ltd safe to pay?" or "Check company 01234567 before I pay this invoice". If you only have a name, it finds the possible matches first. Pick the one whose number is on your invoice or quote.

Common questions

It says no company was found. Check the number on the invoice. UK company numbers are 8 characters, like 01234567 or SC123456. Sole traders and ordinary partnerships are not on Companies House, so that alone is not a warning sign. A made up number is.

It says Be careful. Should I still pay? Read the reasons. An overdue form can be a simple slip, while a strike off notice is more serious. If in doubt, ask the business about it before paying.

It says the check is unavailable. Companies House or The Gazette could not be reached. Nothing was checked. Try again a little later.

The name matches but the company looks different. Company names can move from one company to another. Always go by the company number.
